It’s that time of year when students are stressed, and everything is a mess: midterms. I just had mine (math, chemistry, psychology, and history) and I’m not sure for others, but we didn’t necessarily have tests. For math we had to do a presentation on a unit and topic we were assigned; for chemistry we had to make a slideshow for our favorite food and research a chemical compound in that food. We had to make a distress tolerance box for psychology and we analyzed documents and answered questions for history. Not too bad, in retrospect.
But trying to stay organized when you're stressed is difficult. Papers are everywhere, students are probably jacked up on caffeine from late night studying, anxiety is going haywire over, “What was my score?” “Did I pass?” “Did this bring my grade down?” so on and so forth. Take a deep breath and try to calm down. There’s always the next test and I know you did your best, dear Reader (if you are a student).
Now that it’s over, maybe you should clean and organize your desk area. Wash your clothes or blankets, bedsheets, etc. if you have to. Put papers, notebooks, binders, textbooks, anything that has to be put away back in its place. Wipe away dust from your dresser or any surfaces in your room/school work area. Put away clothes or accessories that are in another place. Make your bed if it’s messy. Open your window or blinds for fresh air or sunlight. Clean and disinfect your bathroom counters. Clean your mirrors. Cleaning is therapeutic and costs less than actual therapy. Speaking of, what’s up with that? Why is it so expensive? Fun fact no one asked for, I want to be a therapist and a part time writer.
Anyways, I cleaned my school desk area, my room, and my bathroom last Saturday and it was like fresh air. It was so nice and relaxing afterwards. I didn’t wash my blankets though because I woke up a bit too late and didn’t wash them until Sunday.
Organization is also very important, especially during the school season. Put all your papers in one area; put your notebooks together, have your textbooks close by, have your pens, pencils, etc. in one spot. Don’t be in your bed during class and don’t do work in there either. When you’re in class, sit at a desk; it’s more effective to learn that way. I know your bed is comfy and warm but you’ll start to relax more and more and might not pay attention to the lessons and then your grades will slip, yada yada yada. Just try to stay organized for school. It’s vital, especially now because of the state we’re in with the virus and not being back in person (unless you are back in person; I can’t speak for every school). Try to stay on top of your assignments and always always always make sure you email your teachers about anything (turned in late assignments, questions about the work, etc.). That is extremely important. Just be polite and respectful, though I’m sure all of you know that already.
Anyways, dear Reader, have a fun time cleaning because it is very therapeutic and good luck with school and your assignments. I know you did your best on midterms but for now, just be in the moment and relax. Buy snacks, do a face mask, watch a movie, talk to some of your friends, make apple cider or your favorite drink. Just relax. Take time to care for yourself, however that may look to you.
Until next time dear Reader.
Signing off,
Mother and Eliot
